Beginner Novice
Requirements: Completion of the skills class or equivalent skills including the CGC class
Prerequisites: Handlers have taken Basic Skills in Obedience class or have competed in AKC trials.
Dog walks on leash at heel on handler's left side .
Dog sits at heel on command.
Dog will sit & stay on command when handler is at least 6' in front of dog with dog on leash.
Dog will come to handler from at least 10' away when called by name.
Dog will allow someone (other than the handler) to pet her head.
Session length: 7 weeks
Cost: $160 ($140 with early registration discount)
Content: "Beginner Novice Obedience" at K-9 is a prep class for competition at AKC trials. AKC Beginner Novice is an Optional Titling class meaning it is not a required title to advance in Obedience. As such, AKC Beginner Novice is useful as a first step in obedience competitions for the dogs (and handlers) new to competitive Obedience. "Beginner Novice Obedience" at K-9 instructs handlers on the 5 required exercises, ring protocol, correct handling skills, and training strategies that encourage enthusiasm and success.

Materials needed: Lots of treats, a flat or martingale collar, 4-6' leash, crate or
mat for your dog to relax on between exercises and platforms if you have them.

While creating this attitude, we introduce the foundations for Novice (BN and CD) level work: attentive heeling (on and off lead), fold-back Downs, tuck Sits, straight fronts, solid stands, eager recalls, confident sits & downs. We will cover handling errors, understanding corrections, training a thinking dog, marking behaviors, "wrong" as a teaching opportunity, and proofing

Content: This is for dogs that already have an understanding of Novice level exercises AND display an eagerness to work with their handlers. Although the emphasis is on Novice exercises such as heeling and recalls, we also lay foundations for work higher up the competitive ladder (retrieves, jumps, etc.). Many of the skills and foundation exercises are also needed in the Rally ring
Materials needed: Lots of treats, a flat or martingale collar, 4-6' leash, crate or mat for your dog to relax on between exercises, a perch (info on perches provided at first class). A clicker, if you know to use it, is extremely useful but not required.
