Novice
Requirements: Completion of the skills class or equivalent skills including the CGC class
Session length: 7 weeks; limited to 8 students
Cost: $160 ($140 with early registration discount)
To Enroll, please go to “How to Enroll in a Class”
Content: This class will begin to prepare you and your dog to compete in the AKC Beginner
Novice and Novice classes. This includes on and off-lead heeling,
recall and stays.
Materials needed: Lots of treats, a flat or martingale collar, 4-6' leash, crate or
mat for your dog to relax on between exercises and platforms if you have them.
This class emphasizes handler skills and developing a dog that is as eager to train as you are, constantly asking you "What's next?" While creating this attitude, we introduce the foundations for Novice (BN and CD) level work: attentive heeling (on- and off-lead), fold-back Downs, tuck Sits, straight fronts, solid stands, eager recalls, confident sits & downs.
We will cover handling errors, understanding corrections, training a thinking dog, marking behaviors, "wrong" as a teaching opportunity, and proofing.
