K9 Nose Work Demonstrations Saturday, February 25th from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
NO DOGS attend this event. Location: K9 Obedience Club of Jacksonville, Inc. 2638 Powers Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207
Nose work is a relatively new sport that unleashes your dog’s natural desire to hunt, harnessing a dog’s unique ability to identify scent and then to find it. Many people find this sport is perfect for shy dogs, those dogs unnerved by new environments, people and other dogs. Nose work is designed to reduce dog-ondog interactions. Dog and handler work as a team in environments free of other dogs. Over reactive (not aggressive) dogs blossom with nose work, becoming more confident and less distracted. Training starts with an introduction to "games" using food or toys as a reward. Dogs learn to find three (or four) distinctive scents no matter if the odor is hidden under a car or suspended from a tree. For those who want to compete, there are trials where your dog can demonstrate their excellence. A small group of scent work professionals founded the sport, creating the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). Their mission is "to make the activity and sport of K9 Nose Work safe, fun and fair for virtually every dog and dog lover." There is no breed discrimination - all may apply! This is a great outlet for dogs with disabilities including blindness, hearing loss and mobility challenges. Marcia Ladendorff, CNWI is certified by NACSW to instruct dogs at all levels of skill, whether the desire is to just have fun or compete. She has been involved in K9 Nose Work for 10 years. She has just retired her elderly Irish setter, who was trialing at the Elite Division. Now, she's busy training her youngster, who is just beginning her competition journey. She teaches nose work for K9 Obedience Club of Jacksonville and also teaches private lessons.
